Komen’s Recommendations
for Good Breast Health

Breast cancer knows no boundary be it age, gender, socio-economic status, or geographical location. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The key to survival is early detection.

Be Aware --- Take Action

Make these changes part of your life. You are the cure.

1. Annual mammography beginning at age 40
2. Clinical breast exams at least every three years beginning at age 20 and annually at age 40
3. Monthly breast self-examinations for all women beginning at age 20

I AM THE CURE® Educational Initiative

HandsThe goal of the I AM THE CURE® educational initiative is to help women understand their opportunity to take a proactive approach in their own breast health and that being aware is the first step in that process.

Messaging will come to life through educational outreach leading up to the Race, and specifically on Race day through “Cure Leaders,” the official cheerleaders of the Race.  Cure Leaders will lead sideline supporters in cheering on runners and walkers along the Race course while reminding them about the important steps everyone should take to care for their breast health.  Cure Leaders will impart powerful, action-oriented messages heard by everyone at the Race.

In addition, “Rovers” will walk throughout the pre-race crowd asking awareness questions and distributing prizes.  At the Komen Education Booth, Race participants can spin the prize wheel and pick up literature about breast self exam, screening and much more.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Cure Leaders and Rovers are currently being recruited.  Volunteers will receive an official I AM THE CURE® T-shirt to wear and keep and will be provided with important props such as megaphones, pom-poms and banners.  Space is limited.
