Komen’s Recommendations
for Good Breast Health

Breast cancer knows no boundary be it age, gender, socio-economic status, or geographical location. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The key to survival is early detection.

Be Aware --- Take Action

Make these changes part of your life. You are the cure.

1. Annual mammography beginning at age 40
2. Clinical breast exams at least every three years beginning at age 20 and annually at age 40
3. Monthly breast self-examinations for all women beginning at age 20

Grants

For the FutureSusan G. Komen for the Cure is the nation's largest private provider of funds for breast cancer research and community outreach programs. Through programs like the Komen Race for the CureŽ Series and other fundraising and awareness events, Komen Affiliates raise tens of millions of dollars each year to help achieve the organization's promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Seventy-five percent of an Affiliate's net income stays in the community. The remaining 25 percent supports the Komen National Award and Research Grant Program.

Since 2001, the Western New York Affiliate has raised more than $2 million to fund local community-based breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved.

A comprehensive community needs assessment, called the Community Profile, is conducted every few years to ensure that funding is directed to non-duplicative programs that address the specific unmet breast health needs of people living in Western New York.

The Komen Western New York Affiliate supports local nonprofits through the following:

These grants have a tremendous impact on our community. Frequently, the Komen Western New York Affiliate is the primary source of local funding for breast health programs.

All requests for science research funding should be directed to the Komen National's Award and Research Grant Program.
